Originally they predicted 1-2 feet, now they're predicting 6 feet by tomorrow afternoon. Hope I don't run out of gas for the snow blower! It's non-stop. It just keeps coming.
And one year ago today I was doing yard work in a t-shirt, living in South Carolina. What did I get myself into?

My back is not ready for 6 feet of snow. I really need to prep my snow blower.

I've never been to buffalo, so forgive my ignorance in this matter, wouldn't it be better to let it quit snowing before pulling out the snowblower?

Holy shit Ithaca and the fingerlakes do not get that kind of lake effect snow. Kinda happy, kinda jelly, not sure.

Serious question: Does Buffalo (and areas like it) have special building codes that ensure structures are strong enough to withstand the weight of that much snow on roofs, eves, etc?

snow blowers have their limits, my crappy little one can only handle about 5-6 inches before struggling. So you have to make trips before you get behind/screwed

lol that wasn't the point but its a good joke. His snowblower must be one pretty extreme girl to be able to handle 2 feet....
but yea, the horsepower/size of the blade on the snow blower really impact how much it can move.

Canada uses both systems often. Although usually height & weight is in murican and temperature & speed is in metric.

Its just a shame that it is so early that 1.) snowmobile trails aren't open (though I've heard some areas in Genesee/Wyoming you can't even ride through) and 2.) it will probably just lead to flooding in 2 weeks when it all melts off.

Whoa. 3' is a pretty crazy storm for a city to deal with, but I simply cannot imagine 6' from ONE storm!? That's insane.
I assume if it does snow that much it's going to set some sort of records?

YES. I live in central NY (Watkins Glen) where we don't get quite as much snow as Buffalo but still a hell of a lot and our buildings are built to ensure they can hold up under the weight of at least 2 or 3 feet of snow but most are actually built to hold up to 5 feet.

This is the reason people who grew up in Buffalo laugh when other cities think they have a "blizzard." It's called lake-effect snow. ;)

Over the lake you are seeing massive steam because the water is 20-30 degrees warmer than the air. Then it drops all that moisture on my house.
We're currently sitting at 5' at my home and some of the drifts are well over my head.
They've predicted that we will have another 3 feet starting this evening and going into Friday. Although for the first part of the storm they originally only predicted 1-2 feet, so I'm not so pleased.

Its certainly exciting and it can be fun if you're prepared. We've been pretty well prepared and haven't had any issues, although I'm running out of gas for the snow blower now.
ArmadaExpress drives a turbo outback

Nope, and I'll explain why. Regardless of how good your snow-blower is (and I bought a bad-ass one) lake-effect snow is a very heavy wet snow. When the snow builds up it compacts itself and can be very difficult to work on.
Unfortunately I didnt get out as early as I expected to clear the driveway for the first time and it literally took me and my wife all day. If I had been able to clear the driveway before there was 4 feet to fight with, it would have taken me much less time (measured in hours less)

daaaayum, badass snow blower.

that's alright I won't get your level of snow.
we had the worst snow fall in metro-detroit history last year and it was just a bit over 95 inches for the whole season. Snowblower kept up fine I just had to stay on top of it.

I was always the geeky type at school and while everyone else did snowmen (boring), I did a sphinx. Unfortunately living so close the west coast of England with weather coming off the atlantic, we rarely get snow. The Lake District gets loads but we get nothing.
